For the past two years the club has hosted the Rethink Your Waste game to raise awareness of the environmental challenges we have here in WA. Our fans have done a great job at reducing waste contamination by 36% at Optus Stadium.

The campaign will be bigger and better in 2021 as we look to broaden our horizons, beyond plastic and waste, so we have looked into the future to help us understand what things we need to start rethinking.

The 2040 film is an innovative feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important NOW. Director Damon Gameau embarks on a journey to explore what the future would look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them into the mainstream.

2040

2040 is a hybrid feature documentary that looks to the future, but is vitally important NOW!

The video gives viewers an idea of what WA might look like in 2040. One of the great strengths of WA is the sunshine – solar energy generation via micro grids, seaweed forests and driverless subscription cars.

The video also looks at what going to the footy looks like in 2040. Stadiums will be powered by batteries and solar energy, food will be regeneratively farmed and people getting to the game on public transport will be arrive by electric, driverless cars.

The club has already taken some big steps in reducing its energy consumption at Mineral Resources Park. Through solar energy generated from 680 solar panels over the roof which equates to 386 annual mega-watt hours. We have also been able to recycle our organic waste in which more than one tonne of compost has been donated back to the local community.

Do the right thing, use the right bin...for our next home game:

Round 15
West Coast Eagles v Western Bulldogs
Sunday, June 27

Don’t forget to remove lids and any food/drink residue left inside containers.

Items that CAN go in the stadium’s YELLOW bins include:

  • Plastic bottles (no lid)
  • Plastic cups
  • Cup trays
  • Paper bags (if clean from food and drink residue)
  • Cardboard Chip buckets (if clean from food residue and oils)
  • Aluminium cans
  • Glass bottles
  • Cardboard boxes and clams (if free from food scraps, sauce and oils – remove coloured paper lining)

Items that CAN’T go in the stadium’s YELLOW bins are:

  • Plastic bags
  • Chocolate wrappers
  • All food scraps
  • Coffee cups and lid
  • Soft plastic wrappers
  • Cardboard trays, paper bags and chip buckets contaminated with food, oils and sauce
  • Round food buckets
  • Paper lining from food trays
  • Ice cream buckets

If you’re unsure whether an item should go in a yellow bin, follow our mantra:

If in doubt, leave it out (and use the general waste RED bins)

Look out for volunteers wearing green Rethink Your Waste t-shirts at Optus Stadium on Saturday. They’ll be armed with all the answers to your recycling questions!
