    Match Preview: Eagles v Tigers

Check out who it’s a big week for, what happened last time and the key match-up ahead of Saturday’s round eight clash with Richmond

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Saturday, May 2, 2.15pm

TV: Delayed until 4pm on 7 and 7plus in WA, nationally on Fox Footy and Kayo (see broadcast guide here)

Last time we met: Richmond 16.9 (105) defeated West Coast 8.8 (56) at Optus Stadium, Round 19, 2025.

Richmond produced a decisive third-quarter surge to defeat West Coast at Optus Stadium, turning a tight contest into a one-sided result. The Eagles were right in the game at half-time after a strong opening half, before sustained Tiger pressure and turnover scoring broke the match open after the main break. Harley Reid was a standout for West Coast, finishing with 27 disposals and two goals, as the Eagles showed promise early before Richmond seized control.

What it means for the Eagles: A win against Richmond would be an important response for West Coast after a heavy loss to St Kilda. Having shown promising signs early in the season, the youthful Eagles’ form has dropped away over the past month and they will refocus on bringing pressure and intensity to Optus Stadium.

The stat: Richmond were West Coast’s first AFL opponent, with the Eagles claiming a 14-point win in Round 1, 1987.

The match-up: Elliot Yeo v Dion Prestia

A classic midfield arm-wrestle shapes as one of the key battlegrounds on Saturday, with two of the competition’s toughest midfield bulls going head-to-head in Elliot Yeo and Richmond’s Dion Prestia. Yeo’s power, defensive edge and presence at the contest will be central to West Coast’s ability to set the tone around stoppages, while Prestia’s strength, work rate and composure under pressure make him one of the Tigers’ most reliable inside midfielders.

It’s a big week for: Liam Baker

It’s a big week for the Eagles’ co-captain, who comes up against his former club for the third time since arriving in the blue and gold. Still chasing his first win against his old side, the occasion carries added motivation as the Eagles look to respond strongly and rediscover their early-season edge.

Big call: The Eagles tighten up defensively and hold Richmond to the lowest score by an opposition team this season.

Match report: Eagles go down to Tigers in thriller

West Coast suffered an agonising 11-point defeat to Richmond at Optus Stadium

West Coast has finished on the wrong end of a thriller against Richmond, going down by 11 points at Optus Stadium as the Tigers snapped their 12-game losing streak.

In a game that featured 14 lead changes, the Eagles were clinging to a two-point advantage with five minutes remaining in front of 46,350 fans when Harley Reid gave away a high-tackle free kick.

Both Reid and Elliot Yeo ran off to guard their defensive 50m, with the umpire pinging Yeo with a 50m penalty for not standing the mark.

Steely Green nailed the set shot from 30m, and Tyler Sonsie kicked a goal a short time later to put the Tigers in the box seat.

West Coast's No.1 draft pick Willem Duursma made things interesting with a stunning left-foot goal on the run with 88 seconds remaining, but Seth Campbell sealed the 15.9 (99) to 13.10 (88) win for Richmond with a clutch long-range set shot in the final minute.

Although the Tigers (1-7) remain on the bottom of the ladder, they secured their first win since beating the Eagles in round 19 last year.

West Coast slipped to 2-6, but it was a big improvement on last week's 101-point loss to St Kilda.

The Eagles 65 inside 50s to 45 and had more clearances, but lost the aerial battle at both ends with Noah Balta causing headaches in attack.

    00:47

West Coast used the week to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of their 2006 flag, with members of that team forming a guard of honour as the Eagles ran through the banner.

There were nine lead changes and plenty of blunders in the first half, with the biggest gaffe belonging to Richmond second-gamer Sam Cumming when he pumped the ball 50m the wrong way.

West Coast kicked the opening three goals of the second quarter - including a two-bounce special on the run from Reid - to open up a 12-point buffer.

But some strong marking in attack from Faull and two goals in the final minute of the half to Balta ensured the Tigers went into the long break with a 10-point lead.

West Coast entered the half-time break having lost a whopping 19 consecutive quarters - a record low for the club.

Alarm bells were ringing for the Eagles when the lead extended to 21 points at the 12-minute mark of the third quarter, but they stormed back into the contest and were just five minutes away from victory before conceding three of the final four goals of the match.

Jack Ross was huge for Richmond with 29 disposals and 11 clearances, while Kane McAuliffe (28 disposals) was also influential.

Noah Balta, Jonty Faull and Campbell kicked three goals each for the Tigers.

    00:48

Tim Kelly led the Eagles with 30 disposals, seven clearances and a goal, while Harley Reid had a hot first half on the way to 26 possessions, 10 clearances and two goals.

Elliot Yeo did everything his power to inspire the Eagles to victory, including a rousing left-foot snap in the first 30 seconds of the final term to put West Coast in front, and finished with 20 disposals, 11 tackles and seven clearances.

Jake Waterman finished with three goals but missed a critical shot in the final term to extend West Coast's lead, and the Tigers roared to victory.

The Eagles travel to Marvel Stadium to face the Demons in round nine next Sunday.
