Getting to the MCG

Public transport is the easiest way to get to the MCG, with Jolimont (five minute walk) and Richmond stations plus tram routes stopping nearby.
 
Driving is not recommended due to extremely limited parking, event-day road closures, and expected congestion.
 
Pedestrian access is via bridges from the city (including a 20 minute walk from Flinders Street), with taxi ranks and designated rideshare drop-off points also nearby.

Last time we met: Richmond 15.9 (99) defeated West Coast 13.10 (88) at Optus Stadium, round 8, 2026.

Richmond edged West Coast by 11 points when the teams last met in round eight at Optus Stadium, with the lead changing hands 14 times in a thrilling contest. The Eagles looked on track for victory after fighting back from a 21-point deficit and holding a late lead, but the Tigers finished strongly to claim the win. Tim Kelly, Harley Reid and Elliot Yeo were influential throughout while Tigers tall Noah Balta was the match-winner with three goals as a forward-ruck.

What it means for the Eagles: Sunday's clash presents another opportunity for West Coast to turn competitive performances into a result. The Eagles have pushed Richmond in their recent meetings but haven't been able to finish the job, suffering narrow losses in two of the past three contests. Victory at the MCG would be the first since 2021 and reward for progress the players have shown throughout the season.

The stat: West Coast generated 65 inside 50s to Richmond's 45 when the teams met earlier this season.

The match-up: Tim Kelly v Tim Taranto

A crucial battle through the midfield looms between two experienced ball-winners in Tim Kelly and Tim Taranto. Kelly has been one of West Coast's most consistent performers in recent weeks, using his class, composure and work rate to drive the Eagles around stoppages and into attack. Taranto remains Richmond's midfield engine, renowned for his contested ball-winning ability and relentless pressure around the contest. Both players thrive in tight situations and have the capacity to influence the game with their clearance work and metres gained.

It’s a big week for: Jack Graham

Jack Graham returns to the Eagles' line-up this weekend after being managed for the Western Derby and will face his former club for the second time this season. The experienced midfielder has been an important addition to West Coast's on-field leadership group in 2026, bringing toughness around the contest and valuable experience to a developing midfield. Graham shapes as a key figure against the Tigers, with his inside work and game knowledge set to be valuable as the Eagles look to secure the win.

Big call: The Eagles produce their best attacking showing of 2026 to overcome Richmond and score triple figures for the first time since round two.

The Eagles did a lot right but couldn’t finish their work, kicking 19 points despite the perfect conditions in their 11-point loss to Richmond at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers, who had less opportunities, were slightly more accurate, holding on to win their third game of the season 12.12 (84) to 9.19 (73).

It was a frustrating game for the Eagles who had the majority of possession, led by Harley Reid (34 disposals, nine clearances) and mid-season recruit Marcus Herbert (34 disposals).

Richmond had seven less inside 50s than the Eagles, however the Tigers kicked 12 goals from their 24 scoring opportunities, whereas West Coast kicked nine from 28 attempts.

The win breaks the Tigers' eight game losing streak and takes them off the bottom of the ladder as they jump above Essendon to sit 17th.

There were moments of pure class, given the sheer amount of talent on the ground, both sides fielding top draft picks from the past few seasons.

The game featured the three most recent No.1 picks in Reid, Sam Lalor and Willem Duursma, the Tigers' Lalor the pick of the bunch kicking three classy goals, taking a high-flying mark in the fourth quarter and kicking the sealer late.

But like their respective teams, the talented trio are developing their consistency, balancing their spectacular moments with unforced errors.

Both sides missed opportunities early, but unlike the Eagles, Richmond's inaccuracy was short-lived.

Hugo Ralphsmith produced one of the highlights of the match with his exceptional goal from the boundary on a tight angle opening the goaling midway through the first quarter.

The Tigers went on from there adding three goals to their tally in the second quarter, while West Coast added one goal and seven behinds.

At times, it was as though the Eagles were inventing new ways to miss in front of goal. You could see the frustration building on the faces of West Coast's forwards as they shook their heads in disbelief.

West Coast found its goalkicking boots in the final quarter, kicking three goals straight for the first time in the contest, whilst the inaccuracy crept in this time for the Tigers.

The Eagles got within striking distance, reducing the margin to 10 points, but the final goal to Lalor within the final minute sealed the win for the home side.
