As the son of champion full-forward Peter Sumich – who played 150 games and kicked 514 goals for West Coast – football is in Zane Sumich’s genes, and the emerging defender is set to take the next step in his career by captaining the WAFL Eagles.

After progressing from South Fremantle’s colts, Sumich spent more than three seasons in the Bulldogs’ reserves, before moving to the Eagles’ WAFL side midway through 2021 to become a mainstay in the backline.

Sumich has a knack for winning the contested ball and is a valued member of the club, playing 11 games last season with an average of 12.6 disposals, 4.2 marks and 2.2 tackles.

Now, taking the reins from former WAFL captain Hamish Brayshaw, Sumich will lead the side into their 2022 season, while continuing to follow in his father’s footsteps as a West Coast Eagle.

“It’s an honour to lead the side into 2022 I can’t wait get out on the park with the boys after a solid pre-season under our new coach Rob (Wiley),” Sumich said.

“West Coast have been fantastic and I’ve enjoyed my time at the club so far, I also can’t wait to captain the boys in the upcoming season.

“I’m looking forward to a great year, bringing our best brand of football and playing against some great WAFL sides.

“We’re definitely looking to be competitive in every game this season, and it’s going to be exciting to match it with some of the best.”
