During the first semester, over 1300 students and 53 schools across the Perth metro area competed within their respective northern and southern zones, before the top teams advanced to a series of finals in two separate divisions.
Emmanual Catholic College defeated Churchlands Senior High School in the Jakovich Division whilst the Glendinning Division was claimed by SEDA College WA after they were victorious over Carine Senior High School.
The Eagles Senior Schoolboys Cup is the premier Year 10-12 schoolboys’ competition in Western Australia, with the West Coast Eagles having worked collaboratively with WA Football and School Sports WA to provide school football competitions for over 15 years.
The Jakovich Division was a battle of the heavyweights, with both Churchlands and Emmanuel finishing top of the ladder in their respective north and south zones.
The match was a tight one early with both teams playing some high-quality football before Emmanuel managed to take a handy lead with two goals right before the half-time siren.
Churchlands caught fire in the second half however, booting three goals in a row along with a few costly behinds leaving them just a few points short of Emmanuel with less than a minute to go as both teams threw all they had into final ball-up in the middle.
Emmanuel managed to surge the ball forward leading to a terrific clutch goal as the final siren roared claiming the 11-point victory and sealing them as the 2025 Jakovich Division premiers - Emmanual Catholic College 6.5 (41) def. Churchlands Senior High School 4.6 (30).
The Glendinning Division was another competitive match with both SEDA College WA and Carine Senior High School having strong performances in the semi-final matches.
The first half was a tight one, but it was SEDA who made the most of their opportunities with four straight goals at half-time to lead Carine who could have been much closer if they had converted any of their six straight behinds.
The lead proved too strong and SEDA were able to stay in control of the match from that point on leading them to a 32-point victory – SEDA College WA 8.5 (53) def. Carine Senior High School 2.9 (21).
WA Football Sporting Schools Coordinator Ben Cribb reflected on the 2025 competition and the ongoing partnership with the club to support grassroots football.
“It's been another great year for the Eagles Senior Schoolboys Cup, and the close finishes in both grand finals were a fantastic way to wrap it up. We had over 50 schools involved across the Metro competition, which speaks to the strength of school football and the continued growth of the program,” Cribb said.
“Competitions like this give students the chance to stay active, play with their mates and represent their school. It’s a great way to keep students engaged in football and build positive connections through the game.
“The ongoing support from the Eagles plays a key role in helping grow school football - not just through this competition, but across a number of our programs. Their support allows us to continue delivering quality experiences for students and schools.
“Massive thanks to the schools, teachers, umpires and support staff who help make the competition what it is. It’s a real team effort behind the scenes, and seeing so many schools and students involved is a credit to everyone who contributes each year.”
The Eagles Schoolboys Cup finals for students in Year 8/9 will commence in term three, as the West Coast Eagles, WA Football and School Sports WA will continue to collaborate to provide meaningful school football competitions.
