Young gun Reuben Ginbey says the Eagles are eager to respond strongly in Saturday’s RAC Derby following a disappointing loss to Richmond.

While the squad continues to show growth and resilience in a demanding 2025 season, Ginbey acknowledged the frustration of not capitalising on early dominance against the Tigers, but insisted the review process had been constructive.

“We started the game really well and our midfield looked strong early, we just didn’t make it count on the scoreboard,” Ginbey said.

“The third quarter wasn’t the footy we want to play, but it’s not all doom and gloom.

“We’ve reviewed it strongly and we’re focused on training hard and improving this week.”

Now a key part of West Coast’s evolving backline, Ginbey has thrived in a defensive role and welcomed the opportunity to build leadership alongside emerging teammates like Harry Edwards, Bo Allan, Tyrell Dewar and mid-season recruit Tom McCarthy.

“We’ve got a young group down there, and I’m really enjoying learning off experienced heads like Liam Duggan and Tom Cole,” Ginbey said.

“It’s definitely a different look to when I first came to the club with guys like Shannon Hurn and Jeremy McGovern back there, but we’re building something together.”

While still early in his career, Ginbey said leadership is something he aspires to in the future and praised the influence of the club’s senior figures as well as the growing voice of teammate Harley Reid.

“I love the leaders we have now they’re really inspiring and seeing great past leaders of our club like John Worsfold, Shannon Hurn and Luke Shuey around the group every day is something to be proud of,” he said.

“Harley’s had a massive year and he’s stepped up as a leader as well, even giving us a rev-up during the game last week. He’s got a great presence around the group.

Looking ahead to Fremantle, Ginbey is ready to take on whichever forward he’s matched up against and relishes the challenge of testing himself against quality opponents.

“They’ve got an exciting mix with guys like Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Patrick Voss,” he said.

“I’m not sure who I’ll get yet, but I love being challenged each week.”

Despite the club’s win-loss record, Ginbey said there remains optimism and belief inside the four walls.

With the Eagles claiming a memorable RAC Derby win in 2024, Ginbey said the group is determined to deliver another strong performance for fans.

“There’s still a lot of optimism and excitement around the group. We’re backing in the coaches and the plan, and with our young core, we feel like we’re growing week by week,” he said.

“Anything can happen in a derby, and we’re really looking forward to bouncing back this weekend.”
