West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter says the months ahead represent a ‘critical period’ for the men’s program as the club pushes to fast-track development, and he’s drawing inspiration from within.
Speaking at a joint press conference alongside AFLW coach Daisy Pearce, McQualter highlighted the strong alignment across both programs and welcomed the opportunity to lean on Pearce’s experience as she enters her second season at the helm.
“I’ll really look to use Daisy as a resource and what she’s learned over that period because I think it’s a really critical point for me coming up as well,” McQualter said.
“We’re at a stage as a team and a club where we have to get better really quickly, so if there’s something I can learn from Daisy’s experience, I’ll look to implement it.”
The collaboration between the men’s and women’s programs has become a defining feature of life at Mineral Resources Park, with both coaches noting the unique opportunity their integrated facility offers.
McQualter also touched on the club’s youth-driven approach and positional experimentation, pointing to defender Tom McCarthy’s recent trial through the midfield.
“He was drafted as a mid-half back but has mainly played in defence for us,” McQualter said.
“He’s been really good back there, so it’s similar to what we do with Liam Baker each week we look at where we can best use his strengths.”
As the men’s team prepares to face Melbourne this weekend, McQualter acknowledged the threat posed by Melbourne star Kysaiah Pickett, who has been spending more time in the midfield.
“He’s one of the most damaging players in the competition,” McQualter said.
“We’ll certainly have plans in place to try and curb his impact.”
With key midfielders Harley Reid (injured) and Jack Graham (suspended) unavailable, McQualter said the increased opportunities have accelerated development for the club’s emerging players.
“It’s not an easy situation, but it’s created growth,” he said.
“We’ve seen Elijah Hewett, Brady Hough and Clay Hall all develop with that exposure. There’s long-term value in that.”
