Waalitj Marawar claimed a stirring comeback victory over Euro-Yoke (St Kilda) on Saturday, overturning a three-quarter time deficit to storm home in the final eight minutes.

Pearce said the victory was built on the players’ ability to stay composed and find solutions when the game wasn’t flowing their way.

“We didn’t execute that well for the first part of the game, but rather than get frustrated they just kept turning up, trying their best and problem solving,” Pearce said.

“It took us most of the game, but in those final eight minutes we played the way we’d been working towards and got the reward.

“I’m really proud of their resilience and ability to keep turning up.”

Pearce highlighted the importance of the team’s time spent together in Melbourne across the week, with the players embracing the chance to connect and grow tighter as a group.

There were plenty of positives on the field too, with Pearce pointing to the versatility of her line-up.

Jess Rentsch provided drive in defence, Courtney Rowley thrived in the midfield, while Ella Roberts made her presence felt up forward.

Charlotte Riggs, one of two debutants alongside Courtney Lindgren, also impressed with her competitiveness and ability at both ends of the ground.

“Lindgren had some really good moments as a forward and was a shining light in the first quarter,” Pearce said.

“Riggs played on some tough opponents and then became the wild card when we changed things up.”

The coach was also full of praise for the families who travelled to support the team, saying their energy was vital in the closing stages.

“I think they were the real difference in that last quarter,” Pearce said.

“It was amazing to walk off the field at the end of the game and feel like it was a home crowd. They are who we play for, and we appreciate their support.”

Attention now turns to round four when Waalitj Marawar returns home to Mineral Resources Park to face Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) on Sunday.

Pearce said the team were eager to keep building momentum on their home deck.

“It will be good to get back home and regroup, building on our consistency and ability to play four quarters,” Pearce said.

“Port Adelaide will be a tough opponent. We’re looking forward to our next test and getting after it.”
