Exciting West Coast Eagles forward Jobe Shanahan has been recognised as the round two Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee following his impressive performance against North Melbourne on Sunday.
The 19-year-old had his first taste of victory in the blue and gold, and contributed 14 disposals, eight marks and two important goals in the Eagles’ 17-point win at Optus Stadium.
“It feels great to be recognised, it means a lot,” Shanahan said.
“But credit to the boys who allowed me to play to my strengths, it really felt like we were all on the same page out there.
“The vibes are up today, the feeling of the win yesterday was pretty unreal, I’ve never felt anything like it.
“The fans were elite and we just really wanted to give them a win.”
Shanahan joined West Coast with pick 30 in the 2024 National Draft and has shown incredible potential with his imposing 195cm frame, strong hands and ability to impact the scoreboard.
Starting 2025 at WAFL level, Shanahan broke into the senior side in round 16 against Collingwood at Marvel Stadium and has held his spot since, with 11 games and 15 goals under his belt.
Shanahan kicked three goals twice last year, against Adelaide and Sydney, and is a key part of the Eagles’ developing forward mix alongside fellow young talls Cooper Duff-Tytler and Archer Reid.
The Moama product praised his senior forward line teammates Jake Waterman and Jamie Cripps after learning plenty from them along his journey so far.
“I think Jake has been really good for me. I’ve obviously watched him a lot at training and how he goes about his craft - he’s been great to learn off,” Shanahan said.
“Crippa’ has been really good too, he helps me stay in games and always brings the energy.”
