The West Coast Eagles will be sporting odd socks at training this week to show their support for charity Sock it to Sarcoma! and Sarcoma Awareness Week.

Sock it to Sarcoma! is the vision of Abbie Basson, a Perth woman who at age 17 had the world at her feet before she was struck down by a sarcoma, which eventually took her life.

Sarcomas are a group of rare bone and soft tissue cancers that are aggressive and often strike children and young people for no apparent reason

Abbie's wish was to create an organisation to raise awareness, fund research and give support to sarcoma patients.

West Coast Eagles premiership stars Dom Sheed and Chris Masten have been Sock it to Sarcoma! ambassadors for several years.

Sheed joined the cause after his cousin was touched by the disease, while Masten threw his support behind the charity when his close friend was diagnosed with a sarcoma.

First-year Eagle Luke Foley also recently joined the Sock it to Sarcoma! ambassadorial ranks.

Masten said building awareness was the key to beating sarcomas.

“We’re just trying to build some awareness, because the earlier you can catch it the better off you are,” Masten said.

“Dom’s cousin had sarcoma and has come through that. One of my close friends has got it now and she’s in remission, which is good. And I think someone in Folesy’s family had it too. It’s pretty good that these people have come through it because some people aren’t that lucky.

“We’ve got the odd socks on this week for training. The boys look great and that’s what we’re doing.”

Sheed encouraged people to visit www.sockittosarcoma.org.au to make a donation to the cause and learn more about sarcomas.

“If you want to learn more about sarcomas you can head to the (Sock it to Sarcoma!) website and you can find out a lot,” he said.

“You can also donate. It’s all for a great cause.”
