Daisy Pearce says West Coast’s mindset hasn’t changed after a breakthrough win, with the Eagles continuing to pursue improvement ahead of an important stint on the road.

The Eagles defeated Brisbane for the first time in the team’s history in a five-point thriller last Saturday, getting reward for effort after a challenging start to the campaign.

With clashes against St Kilda and Essendon during a hub stint in Melbourne to come, AFLW senior coach Pearce says the Eagles remain focused on improving their football.

“I think that’s something we’ve tried to instil in the group for a long time. Not just in response to the start to this season," Pearce said.

“Just sticking to your process and after a win or loss the goal is just improving and making progress.

“Because that’s what we’ve been doing for a while now we haven’t had to change it in reaction to the start of this season or the weekend.

“I love that about this team that they can learn from what we do well and seeing us at our best gives us knowledge and belief but they’re always open to things that we need to improve on.”

Victory over the Lions in round five franked Pearce’s belief that her team was making inroads after a 0-4 start to the year coming off a finals berth last season.

“To get a win against a team like Brisbane you have to have really good balance in your game,” Pearce said.

“You have to be strong in the contest, defend well but then be able to score as well.

“The last time we played Brisbane they were all over us, we couldn’t defend their ball movement, we struggled in the contest against them and then because of that we couldn’t score.

“So to be able to see a game where we start strong and then manage momentum, I just thought it showed overall growth in our team.

“It was good to see it come together and just get a little bit of evidence that we’ve been building and a bit of reward for the hard work of the group, and their resilience after a bit of a disappointing start to stick together and get after it.

“We’ve got some work to do now to keep improving and shift our attention to St Kilda this week, which will be a good challenge.”

The Eagles could have some selection calls to make this round with ruck Liz McGrath (hamstring) and defender Jess Renstsch (foot) listed as tests to be available.

Pearce said West Coast was looking forward to the week-long trip to Melbourne after success in recent seasons.

The Eagles face St Kilda at RSEA Park on Sunday before taking on the Bombers at Windy Hill next Friday.

“We’ve done this the last couple of years the back-to-back Melbourne games just to take out one week of travel and take the opportunity to spend some time together as a group,” Pearce said.

“They’ve done it well in the past that balance between keeping things normal and keeping performance – those two hours of gameplay at the bookends of the week – as our priority.

“Definitely take the opportunity and embrace the time spent together and the chance to get out of the routine a little bit.

“Looking forward to getting over there and appreciate the club’s support to allow us to do it.”
