Speaking to Channel Seven Perth on Monday night, Simpson said he has mixed emotions looking back at the game.
“A bit of relief, we did the hard way though,” he said.
“We knew that the Gold Coast’s strength is their midfield and eventually it clicked for them.
“We’ve got to work on stopping momentum, because at the moment it’s probably costing us four or five goals in a row and it’s in quick succession as well.”
One of the highlights of the match was the huge performance of much-maligned ruckman Nic Naitanui, Simpson was pleased with his output and was hopeful his form could stay.
“Like we’ve been stating all year it’s an ongoing thing with Nic, getting his body to the level that we think he can play consistently,” he said.
“I think the last month has been exceptional with Nic and hopefully that continues.”
There had been some rumours that club games record holder Dean Cox was planning on retiring before the seasons end, but Simpson was quick to quash those rumours.
I’m playing out 2014: Cox
“Not at this stage, we gave him a good rest,” Simpson said.
“He’d played a hundred games straight so I think he might have earned a week off.
“We’ll see how he pulls up this week, but we’ve got to manage him in the right way, we’ve also got some really good young talls coming through as well.
“So we need to find that balance.”
