West Coast has transferred defender Ashton Hill to its inactive list ahead of season 2021.

The club, in consultation with Hill and her family, has decided to give the 25-year-old more time to recover from a knee injury she incurred during the Eagles’ season opening clash with Collingwood in February.

Hill ruptured her ACL in the second quarter of the historic fixture and has been working diligently to rehabilitate her knee after undergoing surgery.

However, club doctors have advised not to rush her recovery, rather recommending a conservative approach that will give her the best opportunity to return to full fitness and play in 2022.

Head of female football Adam Selwood said the decision was made with Hill’s health and wellbeing at front of mind.

“Although we are bitterly disappointed that Ashton will not available to play in the upcoming AFLW season, she is a highly valued member of our football program and a player we must protect for long-term interests,” Selwood said.

“It is our hope that West Coast fans will get to see a fully fit Ashton running around for the Eagles in 2022.”

As per AFLW rules, the club has opted recruit a player to replace the injured Hill.

West Coast this week offered a contract to Peel Thunder defender Demi Liddle, who will start training with the squad tonight.

The 21-year-old had a fantastic year in the WAFLW, playing her role to a tee to help Peel claim the 2020 premiership.

She also earned a berth in the 2020 WAFLW All Stars game at season’s end.

A former state basketballer, Liddle is a natural athlete who is not afraid to put her head over the ball.

The Busselton Football Club product also possesses the ability to shut down tall and small forwards.

Selwood expected Liddle to grab her unexpected opportunity with both hands.

“It is terrific that we are able to provide a wonderful opportunity to Demi, who has shown real promise throughout the 2020 WAFLW season,” Selwood said.

“Demi has been a steady and consistent performer over the past six months and we feel she has adapted to the game quite well since crossing codes from basketball four years ago.

“We expect Demi to support the program to the best of her ability and make the most of the development opportunities she will have by training at an increased intensity.”
