Dynamic West Coast Eagles forward Willie Rioli will be available to return to football by late August after his penalty for a doping infraction was today handed down by the AFL anti-doping tribunal.

Rioli was provisionally suspended on the eve of the 2019 first semi-final against Geelong and has been awaiting his fate since. The AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal today announced a two-year suspension and with time served, he will be available to resume competitive football on August 20.

He will be able to resume training at the Eagles on June 20, giving him the opportunity to prepare for his return to the game.

In dispensing a two-year ban, the Tribunal took account that Rioli was not seeking to gain a competitive advantage, his personal circumstances and that his breach was certain to be detected. Rioli also admitted the violations.

He faced a maximum four-year ban, but the Tribunal determined that a two-year suspension was more commensurate with the seriousness of the allegations.

West Coast Eagles Chief Executive Officer Trevor Nisbett said the club was pleased the matter was now closed.

“We are pleased for Willie that this ordeal is now over and he has some clarity around his future,” Mr Nisbett said. “We look forward to him returning to the club and resuming what is an integral part of his life.

“It has certainly been very challenging for all concerned and what this case has highlighted is the need to continually educate and that the programs in place do not necessarily suit all players.

“Our club would like to acknowledge David Grace QC who handled this matter on our behalf.”

Rioli said he was pleased to see the end of the ordeal.

“I am very relieved that this long process has now ended,” he said. “The stress of waiting for the outcome over a long period of time has been difficult for me and my family.

“I realise I have done wrong things and I have learned from it. I am sorry for letting people down. I am looking forward to putting all this behind me and playing footy again soon.

“I would also like to thank David Grace QC, West Coast Eagles football club, my management & the AFLPA for their support throughout this process.”
