AFLW Match Preview: Swans v Eagles

Check out who to keep an eye on, a stat that matters and what it means for the Eagles in their round 11 battle with Sydney

Where and when: Henson Park, Saturday, October 25, 1:05pm (10:05pm WST)

TV: Live on 7mate and Fox Footy, and streaming live on Kayo

Last time we met: West Coast 4.4 (28) defeated by Sydney 10.14 (74) at Henson Park, round 10, 2024.

What it means for the Eagles: The Eagles have only played the Swans twice since entering the competition and are yet to taste defeat against the red and white. West Coast are on track for a historic finals berth, and a win over the Swans would solidify their spot. This season has been the Eagles most successful season to date, winning six games out of 10 so far, and they will have a well-deserved belief that they can give any team a run for their money.

The stat: Co-captains Bella Lewis (24 disposals) and Charlie Thomas (23) were West Coast’s top ball-winners last time they faced the Swans, finishing second and third overall behind Sydney’s Laura Gardiner (27).

    12:47

    Oppo in focus: Montana Ham

Sydney forward-mid Montana Ham is having an impressive season, averaging 19.1 disposals, 4.7 marks and 4.4 tackles per game, career-highs across the board. While Sydney fell to Melbourne by 44 points last round, Ham still managed 21 touches, five marks and six tackles and played an important role for her team.

It’s a big week for: The whole team

With a maiden finals berth on the line, it’s a defining week for the entire team. A win against Sydney on Saturday would keep the dream alive and mark a historic moment for the club. The team has shown grit and growth throughout the season and now faces a finals-like challenge against a strong Swans outfit. Every player will need to rise to the occasion, bring intensity, and play their role as the Eagles aim to make history and take one step closer to finals.

Big call: Emma Swanson will have another dominant display in her milestone 75th game, inspiring the Eagles to a season-defining win racking up 25+ disposals.

Milestone: Emma Swanson 75 AFLW games.

AFLW Match Report: Swans shine over inaccurate Eagles

West Coast have fallen to Sydney at Henson Park in round 11

The West Coast Eagles will have to wait for at least another week to lock in a maiden top-eight finish, after falling to the Swans by 17 points on Saturday at Henson Park.

Sydney were playing to keep their own finals hopes alive, rising to the occasion on their home turf in the 6.7 (43) to 3.8 (26) victory.

The Eagles suffered a huge blow before the opening bounce with midfield gun Ella Roberts a late withdrawal due to hamstring tightness.

Bella Lewis (24 disposals, five clearances) and young gun Jess Rentsch (nine, four) were among the Eagles that stepped up in Roberts' absence, while veteran Emma Swanson (15) had a close eye on Swans onballer Montana Ham.

With Roberts sidelined, the Eagles were unable to match the Swans' onball brigade early in the contest and when the game was on the line during the third term.

West Coast have made an artform out of chasing down opponents late in games this season but even after booting the first goal of the final term were unable to catch the Swans on their home deck.

Swans forward Rebecca Privitelli made a statement early with a strong mark and the opening goal of the day, finishing with three majors in her 50th AFLW game.

Sydney's Laura Gardiner gathered plenty of the footy, finishing with a game-high 30 disposals and three clearances, while Tanya Kennedy (24, seven) continued her impressive season in the midfield.

The Eagles return home for the final round of the regular season, facing Carlton on Friday night at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
