West Coast Eagles coach Daisy Pearce and midfielder Ella Roberts reflected on last week’s tough loss to Fremantle, with the team now focused on their upcoming clash against Melbourne at Casey Fields.
Roberts acknowledged the challenge of last Sunday’s conditions but was positive about the team’s response in training.
“Last week was a tough result, and the conditions made it hard to play our brand of footy, but there were plenty of positives,” Roberts said.
“We’re focused on Melbourne this week, it’s a massive game against a great team.”
Pearce highlighted the resilience of the squad and the lessons learned from the Fremantle loss.
“Our response and willingness to embrace the day was good," Pearce said.
"We had a bit of a slow start and gave up a couple of crucial moments, but I could see a team out there trying to win and adapt right up until the last two minutes.
“It didn’t suit exactly how we wanted to play, but if we want to be a good team, we have to be able to win in all conditions, so it gave us some great feedback to practice this week.”
Pearce also addressed the challenge of containing Melbourne’s potent forward line.
“A big focus for us will be our pressure," Pearce said.
"If we can limit the supply their forwards get, or apply pressure when the ball does go in, it will really help our backs compete."
She also acknowledged the impact of a few absences, with Lucia Painter (concussion protocols), Liz McGrath (ankle), and Emma Swanson (suspension) all unavailable this week, but emphasised the squad’s depth and preparedness.
Reflecting on the significance of facing her former club, Pearce said it would be a good challenge taking on her old coach Mick Stinear and teammates like Kate Hore.
“I have a lot of respect for them and expect nothing different in competitiveness and will to win,” Pearce said.
Roberts added that the Eagles go into each game with belief, regardless of the opposition.
“Every week is gettable. Melbourne has strengths, but we know them and we want to limit those as much as possible. If we can beat them, we can get anyone,” Roberts said.
The Eagles travel to face Melbourne in what promises to be high stakes encounter on Sunday. Bouncedown is 1.05pm (11.05am AWST) and it will be broadcast live on Channel 7, Fox Sports and Kayo.
