Fin Macrae says he’s relishing the newest chapter in his AFL career after joining the West Coast Eagles.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who arrived from Collingwood last week, admitted the move west was something he had considered for some time.
“I spoke to my manager a couple of years back about the idea of coming to West Coast for a change of scenery and a fresh start,” Macrae said.
“It didn’t happen then, but when West Coast reached out after I was delisted, it all came together.
“I’m really happy to be here.”
Macrae said the lure of joining a young, developing group was a major factor in his decision.
“The growth in this team is exciting,” Macrae said.
“From what I’ve seen and heard, the boys have come a long way from last year to this year, and I wanted to be part of that.”
Macrae played five games for the Magpies after being drafted with pick 19 in 2020 but struggled to lock down a regular spot ahead of some elite onballers.
The Kew Rovers product is determined to make the most of his fresh start and acknowledged the shift from being one of the youngest players at Collingwood to now bringing experience to a developing midfield.
“It’s a big change,” Macrae said.
“I had great mentors at Collingwood like Scott Pendlebury, and I’ve learned a lot from them. Now I want to bring those lessons here and help the younger boys.
“I feel like I’ve got a lot more to offer. I’m only 23, and I know I can contribute a lot here.”
With fellow new recruits Deven Robertson and Harry Schoenberg also joining the Eagles as rookies via the SSP, Macrae believes the trio share a common motivation.
“We all feel like we’ve got plenty left to give,” he said.
“It’s worked out really well for all of us, and we’re ready to push for spots.”
Looking ahead, Macrae expects to play a versatile role under senior coach Andrew McQualter.
“We spoke about half-forward, wing, and midfield roles,” Macrae said.
“I’ll put my best foot forward to hopefully earn a spot early in the season.”
