The West Coast Eagles are deeply saddened by the passing of iconic broadcaster Dennis Cometti in Perth overnight, aged 76.

A master of his craft, Cometti called some of the biggest moments in AFL history with rare wit and timing, including the famous ‘cork in the ocean’ quip when Peter Wilson kicked a goal over his head in the Eagles’ groundbreaking 1992 Grand Final triumph.

Across a five-decade calling career, Cometti’s voice became the soundtrack to the AFL season, and his legacy will live on through generations of unforgettable highlights.

“Dennis was a unique and razor‑sharp football commentator, without peer at the top of his craft,” West Coast Eagles CEO Don Pyke said today.

“He had an innate understanding of the game, honed over five decades as a broadcaster following his playing and coaching career at West Perth, and his calls elevated great moments to even greater heights.”

Cometti was a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, the WA Football Hall of Fame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019.

He was best known for his work with Channel 7, but also called for the ABC – where he began his career in 1972 – as well as Triple M, 3AW and Channel 9.

The media centre at Optus Stadium was named in his honour when the venue opened in 2018.

“Dennis was a giant of the football media landscape, a legendary figure in WA football, and we were privileged to have him call some of our club’s greatest moments from the commentary box,” Pyke said.

“On behalf of the West Coast Eagles, I extend my deepest condolences to Dennis’ family and loved ones at this sad time.”
