Speedy small forward Malakai Champion has signed a one-year contract extension, committing to West Coast Eagles until at least the end of 2027.

The 20-year-old has continued to make promising strides since joining the Eagles as a Category B rookie through the club’s Next Generation Academy.

After earning his AFL debut in round 17 of the 2025 season, Champion continued to build his senior experience in 2026, adding eight AFL appearances while also playing an important role in the WAFL program.

The Kalgoorlie product has shown speed, agility and energy inside forward 50, while his pressure and work rate have remained important features of his developing game.

“I was really keen to stay. As a kid, you dream of getting the opportunity to play AFL, and West Coast gave me that chance, so I’ll always be grateful to the Club,” Champion said.

“I’m really excited about where we’re heading and I feel like there’s something special building here.

“The Club is moving in a really positive direction and I’m grateful that God has blessed me with another opportunity to keep living out my dream.”

Champion first emerged through Subiaco before joining West Coast’s Academy pathway, with his clean hands, quick acceleration and natural attacking instincts among the traits that have stood out throughout his development.

Head of List Management and Recruiting Matt Clarke said Champion had made significant progress across his first two seasons at the club.

“Malakai has shown strong growth across his two years at the club, and we’re excited to see where his development can take him,” Clarke said.

“He’s worked hard to improve his game, embraced every opportunity, and continues to build towards becoming the best player he can be.

“We’re pleased to extend his contract for another year and look forward to seeing his continued progress in 2027.”
