West Coast Eagles defender Will Schofield has a fractured cheekbone, which will not require surgery as a result of facial injuries suffered in an off-field attack on the weekend, but he has been ruled out of the final match of the season.

Schofield was attacked late on Saturday night while in his home town of Geelong and is not available for the clash with Adelaide at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night.

He was walking along Moorabool Street with a friend at around 1am when he was assaulted from behind by an unknown man.

He was taken to Geelong Hospital for treatment and the incident is being investigated by Geelong detectives.

While Schofield has been ruled out, young forward Jack Darling and midfielder Luke Shuey will be assessed during the week.

Darling was subbed out of the game against Collingwood on Friday night just after half-time with hamstring tightness while Shuey missed the game with a similar injury.
