West Coast Eagles AFLW coach Daisy Pearce says her side is tracking well ahead of the 2025 season, with improved physical standards and a deeper understanding of their game style driving a strong pre-season.
Speaking ahead of the team’s practice match against the Bulldogs on Saturday night, Pearce said the group had built on the strong foundations laid in her first year, with a focus on fundamentals and team defence while under pressure.
“We laid down a good foundation of belief and belonging last year,” Pearce said.
“Now we’ve been able to get to work on our system and game plan. We’ve seen great growth in our fundamentals under pressure and our team defence.”
Pearce confirmed that Ella Roberts, Ali Drennan and Jess Rentsch would return to the squad this weekend, adding depth and versatility through the midfield.
Co-captain Bella Lewis is expected to be ready for round one as she continues her recovery from an ankle injury sustained earlier in the pre-season.
“’Rentschy’ missed last week’s practice game but came out in match sim and asserted herself with the way she hunts the footy and tackles,” Pearce said.
“She’s worked really hard on her endurance and running capacity this off-season. She sets the tone early in sessions and treats herself like a professional athlete but still brings fun and energy.”
Pearce also praised the return of experienced leader Dana Hooker, who will play her first full game on the wing this weekend after giving birth to her second daughter, Zara, in December 2024.
“Dana played WAFLW just three months postpartum and has added to our group’s running capacity,” Pearce said.
“Her leadership and professionalism have been a huge asset.”
Pearce highlighted the League’s WAFLW pathway, with up to 10 train-on players currently supporting the squad in pre-season.
“The standard of those players has improved a lot, which helps us get better too,” Pearce said.
“It’s a great sign of the depth and growth in WA football.”
The Eagles take on Gold Coast in their season opener, playing at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Thursday, 14 August at 7.15pm. Tickets available here.
