Match Preview: Magpies v Eagles
Check out who it’s a big week for, what happened last time and the key match-up ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Pies
Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday, June 28, 7.35pm (5.35pm AWST)
TV: Live on 7 and 7plus in WA, nationally on Fox Sports and Kayo (see broadcast guide here)
Last time we met: Collingwood 15.13 (103) defeated West Coast 5.7 (37) at Marvel Stadium, round 9, 2024.
Collingwood proved far too strong for the Eagles in their last encounter, running out 66-point winners at Marvel Stadium. After an early goal from Ryan Maric, West Coast struggled to contain the Magpies' centre bounce dominance, which fuelled a seven-goal second quarter and set up a 55-point half-time lead. While the Eagles managed to limit the damage in the second half and won the final quarter, the result was beyond reach. Debutant Tyrell Dewar and Harvey Johnston provided some bright spots with composed performances.
What it means for the Eagles: It’s a classic David vs Goliath battle as the Eagles prepare to take on the top of the ladder team Collingwood this weekend. While the challenge is immense, it presents a valuable opportunity for West Coast’s young and developing side to test themselves against the benchmark of the competition. Every moment against a top-tier opponent is a chance to learn, grow and build resilience and key ingredients in shaping the club’s future. With nothing to lose, the Eagles will be out to play with spirit, take the game on and show their fans glimpses of what’s to come as they continue to demonstrate how their hard work and improvement are beginning to take shape on the field.
10:15
The stat: West Coast will field their seventh debutant of the 2025 season in Jobe Shanahan, adding fresh energy to their lineup.
The match-up: Harley Reid and Nick Daicos
The battle to watch is between young gun Harley Reid and Collingwood's midfield maestro, Nick Daicos. Reid has been a standout for the Eagles, earning a Mark of the Year nomination last time they met. Daicos, on the other hand, is a Brownlow Medal contender, in red-hot form and a key driver of Collingwood's midfield dominance. While they might not go head-to-head, their performances will be pivotal in determining the game's tempo and midfield control. With both players central to their teams' strategies, witnessing these two match-winners get to work will be a highlight of the game.
01:42
It’s a big week for: Jobe Shanahan
Jobe Shanahan will make his much-anticipated AFL debut for the Eagles this weekend against Collingwood. After impressing in the WAFL all season, Shanahan’s opportunity to step up comes at an important time for the club with a youthful squad coming off the bye and seeking to finish the season strongly. His athleticism and versatility will add a point of difference to the team, and the Eagles are excited to see him bring his fearless style to the big stage.
Big call: Jobe Shanahan to kick the first goal of the game.

Match report: Gutsy Eagles fall short of Pies upset
The Eagles led the League leaders at half-time but couldn't hold on at Marvel Stadium
West Coast fought until the end but couldn't produce an upset for the ages in a spirited defeat against flag fancy Collingwood at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
The ladder-leading Magpies – now 10 points clear of second-placed Brisbane – had to claw and fight for the 29-point victory over the Eagles, stunted and pressured at nearly every turn.
West Coast's work ethic was unquestioned, but ultimately the class of Collingwood led to the 13.10 (88) to 8.11 (59) victory in its second Marvel Stadium home game of the season.
The Eagles - without three of their leaders - were strongly led by co-captain Liam Duggan (27 disposals) and Liam Baker (35), while Brady Hough enjoyed an impressive game in midfield with 29 touches and a classy left-foot goal.
Harry Edwards was also a pillar down back, taking six intercept marks, while second-gamer Tom McCarthy backed up his stunning debut with another 29 composed touches.
Collingwood got on top as the game wore on around clearances, with Scott Pendlebury (28 disposals, nine clearances, one goal) and Darcy Cameron (20 disposals, nine clearances, 36 hitouts) getting the Pies moving out of the middle, while Jeremy Howe (two contested marks, six intercepts) was the north star under a barrage in defence.
08:08
The Eagles' competitive start was born from workrate and pressure. They traded majors early, with the 18th-ranked side landing the opening blow, and then returning serve to keep the Pies unsettled and lacking fluency.
West Coast was soon under threat, however, as Collingwood slammed home four quick goals to open the second quarter. Milestone man Brody Mihocek (seven marks, two goals) got the ball rolling, before debutant Charlie West had the crowd on its feet for his first career goal with his first kick.
But the Eagles stuck fat, getting back to the frenetic, pressure-filled style of footy that had them in front at the first break, handing them an eight-point lead at half-time. It was led by Hough's effort to move from contest to contest, which was standard setting, as was Baker's work coming off half-back.
Given Collingwood's desire to play an aggressive defence, getting high and attacking, West Coast's intention to move the ball quickly – and unpredictably – down the ground created opportunities inside 50.
It didn't always work perfectly, with the visitors' handball game susceptible to the Pies' high pressure, but it was enough to unsettle the ladder leaders.
Every time West Coast took control, it was via centre clearance that the Pies wrestled it back. With powerful, attacking clearances out of the middle, they had the Eagles' defenders on their heels.
Collingwood's leaders stood up, and despite things not coming easily, got it done in the small moments.
There were positives aplenty for West Coast, including the debut of towering youngster Jobe Shanahan.
Shanahan moved well, creating space for teammates inside 50 and leading at the ball, and in the second quarter had his moment.
Charging to the top of the 50m arc, the 18-year-old took a strong contested mark and went back to calmly slot the goal that put the Eagles back in front.
The Eagles' seventh debutant for the season, Shanahan showed more than enough to suggest he has a bright future at the level.
West Coast returns home for a Friday night showdown with Greater Western Sydney at Optus Stadium in round 17.
